 <p>You can insert subscripts and superscripts with the <code class="code">@sub</code>
 and <code class="code">@sup</code> commands.  For example:

 <p>In Info and plain text, <code class="code">@sub{<var class="var">text</var>}</code> is output
 as &lsquo;<samp class="samp">_{<var class="var">text</var>}</samp>&rsquo; and <code class="code">@sup{<var class="var">text</var>}</code> as
 &lsquo;<samp class="samp">^{<var class="var">text</var>}</samp>&rsquo;, including the literal braces (to mark the
 beginning and end of the &ldquo;script&rdquo; text to the reader).
 </p>
 <p>When the output format (and display program) permit (TeX, HTML),
 the superscript is set above the subscript when both commands are
 given consecutively.
 </p>
 <p>For subscripts and superscripts in mathematical expressions, it is
 better to use TeX&rsquo;s &lsquo;<samp class="samp">_</samp>&rsquo; and &lsquo;<samp class="samp">^</samp>&rsquo; characters.  See the
 next section.
